Make sure it is real Pukhraj
The biggest risk when buying Pukhraj in Pakistan is not glass but other yellow gems sold under its name. Citrine and yellow topaz are both commonly passed off as Pukhraj. They are beautiful stones, but they are different minerals and far less costly. True Pukhraj is corundum, 9 on the Mohs scale, the same mineral as Neelam and ruby. Our listings always name the mineral, and a certificate of authenticity is available on request.
Ceylon Pukhraj and other origins
Sri Lanka (Ceylon) is the most famous source, known for clean, bright lemon to golden stones. Madagascar and parts of East Africa and Southeast Asia also produce yellow sapphire, ranging from pale to deep honey tones. Origin can affect price, but colour and clarity matter more. Where we know the origin, we state it.
How to judge a Pukhraj
- Colour - a vivid, even canary to golden yellow is most valued. Very pale or brownish stones cost less.
- Clarity - yellow sapphire is often quite clean; eye-visible inclusions lower the rate, while tiny natural silk is normal.
- Treatment - heating is common and accepted; unheated stones carry a premium. Beryllium diffusion, which produces strong yellow-orange colour, must be clearly declared.
- Cut - good proportions and no dull window in the centre.
- Size - fine Pukhraj above a few carats is much rarer, so the per-carat rate climbs.
Each listing's per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.
Testing at home and in the lab
Natural yellow sapphire feels cool and heavy for its size and often shows faint silk or colour banding under a loupe. Glass warms quickly and may contain bubbles. Telling sapphire from citrine or topaz reliably needs proper testing, so for an important purchase we recommend asking for the certificate or arranging independent lab testing.
Pukhraj in Vedic astrology
In Vedic astrology Pukhraj is the stone of Jupiter (Brihaspati or Guru), traditionally worn for wisdom, prosperity, good counsel and marital harmony. Custom often favours setting it in gold and wearing it on the index finger, but practices vary. These are beliefs rather than guaranteed outcomes; please consult an astrologer you trust about weight and setting.
Caring for your yellow sapphire
Pukhraj is very durable. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and store it away from diamonds.
